Sin is like disease. Minor sins (venial sins) like laziness and jealously are similar to the common flu and cough which can be easily cured. Major sins (mortal sins) like murder and adultery are similar to life-threatening diseases like cancer and heart diseases which require more urgent attention. The Church is akin to a hospital and priests are like doctors. The good news is that unlike diseases, every sin can be "cured" and forgiven! For Catholics, attending Mass brings forgiveness to venial sins for which one is sorry while going for Confession with sincere repentance brings forgiveness to mortal sins.
